Rising up

Timely defense and a top-heavy offense earned Whittier its third straight victory, 5-1 over Division 1 foe Haverhill. Sophomore second baseman Nate Frongillo played "the best defensive game I've seen in a long time," according to Wildcat coach Joe Boland, making several stops that stopped Hillies runs from scoring. Brian Vezina had an RBI triple as well as a double and leadoff man George Gouthier added a pair of doubles.

Reliever turned starter

Lawrence senior Carlos Ditren earned his first varsity win in his first start.

Typically a reliever, Ditren went seven innings and gave up one run, no earned runs, and three hits while striking out 11 batters to help Lawrence baseball win 3-1 over Haverhill.

With sophomore Dan Burrows making his first start on the mound, Haverhill pulled together to defeat Tewksbury, 10-4.

As is usually the case with a struggling team, mistakes magnify and can make all the difference. In the case of Haverhill baseball, two defensive errors broke open a tight game against Billerica, ending with a 3-0 decision. Manny Vargas was the tough-luck loser on the mound for the Hillies as he gave up just six hits and one earned run over six innings.

Alex Driscoll had three hits, and Sean McQuillan added a pair for the Warriors. Sophomore Nick Comei belted a two-run homer and had three hits for the Hillies.

Central Catholic built a nine-run lead early then survived Haverhill's comeback run for a 13-7 baseball victory. Colin Walsh (triple and double, both scoring runs) and Connor Perry (two-run double, superb defense) were the linchpins for the Raider victory.
