Star forward Candace Waldie is still out with a knee injury, but it hasn't slowed down the North Andover field hockey team much.

The Knights blanked Rockport 1-0 yesterday, outshooting their opponents 26-3, while improving their record to 7-1-2.

Providing a scare

Pentucket's field hockey team had powerhouse Manchester Essex tied at halftime, 1-1, before finally dropping a 3-1 decision.

 "They've been killing everyone, but we played very well against them," said Pentucket coach Ruth Beaton. "We'll take this kind of effort any time."

Fast start stings Knights

In a rivalry that has been big "since (North Andover head coach Courtney Breen) was in high school," Manchester-Essex handed North Andover its first loss of the year, 2-0. After the Hornets struck for two goals in the first six minutes of play, Steph Twomey turned aside a first-half penalty stroke and Meg Foster played a shutout second half in net for the Scarlet Knights (7-1-2). Amanda Foote was a bright light for North Andover as were forwards Alie Moen and Michelle Martin.

Rockport scored in the first three minutes of the game and held on to top North Reading, 1-0. Center midfielder Kaitlyn Battaglia played a very strong game on both ends of field for the Hornets (0-1-2). Kyra Zani turned aside seven shots in the setback.

Knights advance

North Andover edged Gloucester 3-2 in the first round of the Division 1 North tournament. Candace Waldie scored a pair of goals and Courtney Lynch added a pair of assists. The Scarlet Knights will host the winner of today's Salem-Reading clash on Monday at 3:45 p.m.

Manchester 4, Rockport 0

In the last regular season game of the season, the Hornets (14-2-3) clinched the Cape Ann League small title with a convincing win over Rockport (7-10-2). Junior wing Amelia Cohen scored two goals and dished out an assist. Other Manchester Essex goal scorers included Katie Gavin and Eliza Blatchford while Lee Stroman, Annie Osborne each notched assists as well.

Kat LaCroix and Marissa Drozd scored two goals apiece while Brianna Aloisio (assist) tallied the other Gloucester goal. Olivia Frontiero had two assists. Olivia Brown was the other star in the win.

Emily Castro put the Fishermen (11-4-2) up 1-0 in the first half off a corner play from Kat LaCroix and Brianna Aloisio.

The Magicians tied it up early in the second half before Olivia Frontiero put home the game-winner, with assists from Aloisio and Emily Interrante. Fishermen goalie Alicia Unis made 10 saves.

It was one of those days where the Hornets (12-1-3) couldn't find the back of the net despite 16 corners. Senior inner Jen Bishop scored just 51 seconds into the game with an assist from junior left wing Amelia Burke. Senior center halfback Meredith Crofton was another standout for Manchester Essex, who also had two goals called back.
