McNiff places fifth at Eastern Mass. Championships

Gloucester senior co-captain Avery McNiff had a fine showing at last Friday's Eastern Mass. Division 2 Track and Field Championships.

McNiff, who missed half of last fall's cross country season and all of the indoor track season with injuries, highlighted the day for Gloucester's competitors with a fifth place performance in the two mile.

Gloucester track still winning yet without a home

The track at Gloucester High School has fallen into disrepair again and is unusable for meets and practices. Despite the setback, the Gloucester boys outdoor team continues to dominate, winning their 11th NEC title in 15 seasons.1 Photo

Jim Munn led his Gloucester boys track team to Newell Stadium for a routine middle of the season practice.

Although the practice may have seemed normal, there was actually nothing routine about it as the team could not practice on its own track. The pothole laced track that circles around the Newell Stadium football field has been condemned and cannot be used for either practices or meets for the boys and girls track squads.

Witches get better of Gloucester

Meghan Wilkins won the long jump, Ali Moncao won the triple jump and the pair tied for the win in the 400 to spark Salem (2-1) over Gloucester 85-37. Desiree DeLeon qualified for the state meet with a 13.2 in the 100 while Rebecca Bennett won the 800, Monique Gallant took the mile and Nicole Maurice came out on top in the two mile.

But it will be the local boys who may have to picket and lobby for fair treatment. Their female counterparts should again gather the lion's share of the headlines, records and honors. Last spring there were 36 additions to the area's all-time list on the distance side and only five male additions.
