Whittier coach Kevin Bradley can’t quite gauge what his Commonwealth Conference Large Division champs will derive out of their Thanksgiving morning test at Hudson Catholic.
The one thing he hopes they won’t get out of the nonleague matchup is injuries.
“Hopefully, it will be a tuneup for us,” said Bradley. “We want to be playing our best football right now. Hopefully, we can do that, stay healthy and give ourselves the best chance possible in the playoffs.”
From all indications, the 8-2 Wildcats won’t encounter much resistance from the Green Wave, an 0-9 Central Mass. independent.
One hometown newspaper report had Hudson Catholic, which once competed in the Eastern Mass. Catholic Suburban League, with a roster of just 17 players, including three freshmen, an eighth-grader and a seventh-grader.
How much of a mismatch could this one be? They have one common opponent.
Three weeks ago, the Wildcats defeated Minuteman Regional, 40-0. Three weeks before that, Minuteman took on Hudson Catholic and pasted the Wave by the same score, 40-0.
“It’s a one-year commitment. We were both trying hard to find a Thanksgiving game,” explained Bradley.
Sources at Greater Lawrence Tech, which currently plays Lawrence, say that a deal with Whittier for Thanksgiving is a reality.
The Cats are hoping for a healthy return to the backfield for Bryan Trickett (16 TDs, 681 yards rushing).
Trickett carried only once against Minuteman and missed the last game, a playoff-clinching win over Lynn Tech.
Carlos Candelario and Tyler Page (combined 155 carries for exactly 1,000 rushing yards) have done a nice job picking up the slack.
“Trickett’s had the ankle problem and the rest has done him good,” said Bradley. “He’ll definitely be ready for the playoffs, and we’ll see on Thanksgiving.”
Andre Sinacole, a senior linebacker, is the main threat for the Wave, who also rely heavily on QB Jeremy Williams.
The Wave will try to snap Whittier’s eight-game holiday win streak (2001-07 over Cathedral, 2000 over Greater Lowell.
