HAVERHILL — Coming into the season, one of the most important things that Whittier girls basketball coach Kevin Bradley stressed to his team was getting off to a good start to games and dictating the game’s pace. Yesterday afternoon, the exact opposite happened and it proved to be the difference in a 69-63 loss to Shawsheen.

Whittier Tech locked down its first boys hoop Commonwealth Conference title since 1995 with a 60-55 win over Shawsheen Tech. Justin Reyes prowled the paint with reckless abandon, leading all scorers with 23 points while adding 14 rebounds and 4 blocks. Ryan Grant had 21 points for 15-1 Whittier.

Freshmen Andrea Terranova (team-high 14 points) and Samnell Vonleh (10 points) were the driving forces behind Whittier's 68-45 victory over Minuteman.

Justin Reyes pumped in 24 points and Ryan Grant added 14 points as streaking Whittier improved to 14-1 with a 80-49 win over Minuteman.

Adriana Joe had a fantastic defensive game as she shutdown Lynn Tech's top scorer in Whittier's 54-26 win over Lynn Tech.  Joe had eight rebounds in the win. Andrea Terranova led all scorers with 15 points and five steals.

Derek Hunter and Dan Rivet each scored two goals while Mike Cusack, Jake Silk and Rick O'Connor each added two assists to help North Andover boys hockey win 4-2 over Amesbury-Whittier. 

Whittier raced out to a 17-point halftime lead and held on for a 57-49 victory over Mystic Valley. With 14 points apiece, junior Andrew Wells hit on four 3-pointers while classmate Justin Reyes drained six free throws.

Andrew Wells drilled five 3-pointers and played solid defense while Justin Reyes had a strong fourth quarter and finished with 22 points as Whittier beat MVC foe Dracut, 70-56.

Freshman Travis Motsis scored his first varsity goal, which proved to be the game-winning in Whittier-Amesbury's 3-2 win over Pentucket-Georgetown. Freshman Tabor Smith assisted on the goal along with junior Tucker Holt, who earned his first varsity point with that helper. Junior Evan King (18 saves) withstood a late Pentucket enslaught to secure the win.
