NORTH READING — The looks on the Hornets’ faces told the story.

North Reading was shocked, watching a 22-point halftime lead slowly slip away in a 30-24 overtime loss to Bishop Fenwick.

“Part of this has to go on the defense,” said head coach Jeff Wall. “We have to play better as a team, but we had a 22 point lead. From the top on down, we had to do a better job on defense.”

The Crusaders converted three fourth downs in the second half, succeeding on lengths of 4, 9 and 13 yards.

But, North Reading still had two chances to ice the game late in the fourth quarter — once up 22-16 and then ahead 24-16 — before two fumbles, one of which came on Fenwick’s 3-yard line, turned the ball over. Fenwick converted the latter into points to tie the game with 1:47 left in regulation.

Then, Bret Kidik then found Ryan Lipke on the first play of overtime with a 10-yard touchdown pass on a out pattern in the left corner of the end zone. North Reading failed to score in four tries on its possession to end the game.

The Hornets did find some spark with the work of Nick Rosano under center, making his second start of the season at quarterback after playing receiver early on.

Rosano accounted for all 65 yards in a game-opening scoring drive that spanned eight plays, rushing for 29 and throwing two balls to sophomore wideout Evan Wade for 36 yards and a touchdown.

“(Rosano) is a guy who wants the ball, so we thought what better way than to snap it to him on every play,” Wall said. “He’s probably the best athlete in the building.”

After a Mike Moscaritolo interception on Fenwick’s first play from scrimmage, Rosano connected with Wade again just 26 seconds later on a 25-yard strike.

“We’re coming along,” Wall said. “We can score points now, that’s nice. We have to tighten things up defensively and take our bye week now to just refocus.

“This is only the halfway point of the season. We still have our entire league schedule ahead of us.”
