NORTH READING —  Disapointing. North Reading football coach Jeff Wall summed up his view of his Hornets 22-7 loss to Ipswich in just one word.

“We got everything we wanted in the first drive of the game,” said Wall. “But everything changed after that.”

The Hornets opened its 2010 campaign as strong as coach Hall could have liked after marching downfield on the game’s first possession and punching home a touchdown. The Hornets dominated the trenches, opening huge holes for quarterback Ryley Wornock and running back Carl Lipani (65 yards rushing) who led the offense to the one-yard line before a Nicholas Rosano touchdown run.

Things changed quickly however as Ipswich responded on its first play with a magestic 48-yard pass down the sideline from quarterback Brendan Gallagher (7-10, 181 yards passing) to receiver Cam Murray.

Six plays later the duo hooked up again for a five-yard touchdown pass and the Tigers never looked back. Gallagher continued to shred the Hornet defense throughout the half tossing two more touchdown passes to receiver John Eldredge. The second, a 59-yard bomb down the sideline, came with just 26 seconds left in the second quarter. Moments earlier North Reading looked to get back into the game when Wornock connected with Rosano for 44 yards but the play was negated by a penalty. The Hornets then failed to convert on fourth-down giving the ball back to the Tigers.

“You could say the wind blew out of our sails after that penalty and then the touchdown,” Hall said. “We looked like we could get back into it but we lost all confidence after that.”

Although the Hornet defense buckled down in the second half, its offense never regained the form of the first drive, netting just 19 total yards in the second half as Ipswich focused on the running game and controlled the ball for most of half.

“Once we got down we got away from our comfort zone,” said Hall. “We started chasing points too quickly and Ipswich is a much imrpoved team from last year and it showed.”

North Reading looks to rebound next week against Newburyport at home.
