BROCKTON — North Reading played Cardinal Spellman tough last night, but it was not able to contain running back Blaise Branch in a 28-16 setback.

Branch rushed for 175 yards on 21 carries and scored on runs of 57 and 28 yards as Spellman (1-2) won for the first time this year.

Trailing 14-0 after the first quarter, North Reading cut the lead to 14-8 in the second quarter when Richard Schaffer hauled in a 34-yard touchdown catch from quarterback John Brooks and Bobby Rosano ran in the extra points.

Branch's 28-yard run in the third quarter proved to be the winning score as both teams traded scores in the fourth quarter, the Hornets (1-2) scoring on a one-yard Rosano run with Brooks running in the extra points.
