The long wait | about five months | is over.

Peabody is expected to name veteran assistant Scott Wlasuk to head its 2008 football program, it was learned yesterday.

Wlasuk, who will become the Tanners' fourth head coach in the last five seasons, succeeds Dick Woodbury, who resigned for health reasons after one year on the job and a 1-10 season last fall.

Wlasuk, a long-time offensive and defensive backfield coach at Peabody High who is known for his boundless energy, will be officially named today.

The three finalists for the job included Peabody High baseball coach Mark Bettencourt, who was the quarterbacks coach last season; and Rueben Reynoso, a two-sport Peabody track assistant who is also the offensive coodinator at Wakefield High.

Wlasuk, a Peabody police officer, is expected to include Bettencourt and Reynoso on his football staff.

Wlasuk, one of Peabody High's all-time lacrosse greats, was considered a key contributor while serving on Ed Nizwantowski's football staff during Peabody's salad days in the 1980s and '90s.
