Pentucket downed by Masconomet

BOXFORD - After Masconomet recovered a Pentucket fumble on its fourth play of Friday night's game, the hosts' offense the field for the first time determined to put together statement drive.

Eight plays later, Pete Kitsakos plunged into the end zone to cap a drive where the Chieftains never attempted a pass. The statement was made - and the message carried all night.

Masconomet rode its three-headed rushing attack and Kitsakos' three scores to a convincing 35-7 triumph over the Sachems. The hosts churned out 307 yards rushing and had four scores via the ground.

Kitsakos scored on the opening drive before Danny Monagle made it 14-0 with a 2-yard score in the second quarter. Kitsakos, Monagle and Jay Theriault combined for 271 yards on the ground while averaging 9 yards a touch.

"They're big and very athletic," Pentucket (1-3) head coach Steve Hayden said of Masconomet and its rushing attack. "Kudos to them; they do a nice job."

In the final minute of the opening half, Masconomet quarterback Matt Brockelman found Max Latam down the seam for a 33-yard touchdown strike.

Pentucket's score came on an 8-yard touchdown run by Gus Flaherty, and the Sachems were knocking on the door for a second score late in the fourth. But Masconomet buckled down and forced another fumble before running out the clock.

The Sachems were able to move the ball at times and Flaherty was 5-for-5 through the air in the final two quarters. But the hosts, led by the superb play of Theriault at linebacker, hit hard and flew to the football all night.
