Masconomet Softball Preview

Coach: Jessica Greus (2nd season)

Returning players: Rachelle Haas, Jr., 2B: Maura Powers, Sr., 1B: K.J. McGann, Sr., C; Stephanie Guido, Jr., OF; Katie Guido, So., P/OF; Olivia Story, So., 3B; Allison Shamon, So., SS; Jenna O'Neil, So., OF; Amanda Soffron, So., INF/OF.

Strengths: Coach Greus, a former Division 1 player at Centenary College in Shreveport, La., feels she can implement more of her strategy in her second year with the Chieftains. She also feels she has two quality pitchers in Katie Guido and freshman Lissa Rescigno. In addition to Rescigno, other newcomers who could help are senior Meri DeAngelis (infielder/outfielder), junior Marissa Paci (utility) and freshman Lexi Corso (infielder/outfielder). Masco should be able to stay in games with its defense.

Concerns: There will be a period of adjustment with girls playing new positions and this is still a young team.

Coach's outlook: "This year's tryout was 100 percent better than last year, so (from that standpoint) what more could a coach ask for? Like any other coach, my goal is definitely to have us make the state tourney. I think we have a team that can do it."
