No. 11 Andover closed a 17-point deficit to five early in the fourth quarter but couldn't creep and closer, falling to No. 6 Acton-Boxboro, 68-54 in first round Division 1 North tourney action. Triggering the second half comeback, Joe Bramanti led the Warriors with a game-high 26 points, making his last 11 free throw attempts.

ANDOVER — With a playoff berth — as well as a seed — already determined, Andover had nothing to gain or lose in its regular-season finale last night. Except, that is, for a little revenge.

Joe Bramanti poured in 38 points, including converting 17 free throws, to lead Andover boys basketball to a 75-66 victory over Newton North at the BC High tourney. 

BOSTON — With Andover grinding through a rugged closing stretch, Joe Bramanti has thoughts on so much more.

Still, the Andover High senior found a second or two to appreciate the accomplishment.

ANDOVER — For someone who had never converted a game-winning shot before, Central Catholic’s Jaycob Morales sure looked experienced with time running out last night.

The senior guard took a pass from Luis Puello with the clock approaching the end of regulation and nailed a 3-pointer from the wing as time expired, capping Central’s furious fourth-quarter rally as the Raiders knocked off host Andover 59-56 before a standing-room only crowd. With the victory, Central Catholic finished undefeated in Merrimack Valley Conference play for the third straight year.

ANDOVER — Although it was nothing close to scintillating, Andover did just enough down the stretch to win its rivalry game against visiting North Andover last night.

The sixth-ranked Golden Warriors first prevented the Scarlet Knights from running away and hiding in the second quarter, then survived a fourth-quarter drought that lasted 5 1/2 minutes before eking out a 51-46 victory. Andover, which defeated North Andover by three in the finals of the Greater Lawrence Christmas Tourney, has won each of the past four outings the past two years against the Knights by a combined 25 points. North Andover has scored fewer than 50 points or fewer in three of those defeats.
