LOWELL — Try as he might, Central Catholic’s Cam Fisichelli could not find the bright side.

“This was a tough, tough way to end a great season,” said the co-captain. “It is so tough to go out the way we did. This game will stay with us for a while.”

Central Catholic falls in shootout

LOWELL — It took overtime, a shootout and a disputed call for Central Catholic to suffer its first loss of the season.

After a feverous Raiders rally sent the game into overtime, Central Catholic saw a goal in the decisive shootout disallowed in its 3-2 loss (3-1 in the shootout) to Catholic Memorial in the second day of the Super 8 tournament.

MacPhee, Keller give Central Super 8 win

“(Steve) Balsamo fired me a great pass,” said Conor MacPhee. “I had a wide-open shot and hit it low blocker side. I saw the fan section just go crazy, and it was just awesome.”

Brendan McCarron tied his season-high with two goals as Central Catholic finished off its undefeated regular season with a 4-3 win over Westford Academy. The win clinched the Merrimack Valley Conference/Dual Country League Division 1 title for the Raiders (15-0-7). Nick Leonard and freshman Tom Evangelista each added a goal for the winners.

Central Catholic was firmly in control of Chelmsford, leading 4-2 in the third when the game was suspended due to a broken pane of glass in the rink. It is unclear when and if the game will be completed. Steve Balsamo scored a goal and assisted on another to lead the Raiders.

Central Catholic's 5-3 ice hockey victory over North Andover was not as dominating as one might expect, but it was a big day for freshman goalie Kyle Williams. He not only got the win in net, but he also assisted on one of the goals.

The Central Catholic hockey express rolled along yesterday, following a 4-0 win over Waltham. Conor MacPhee had two goals for the Raiders (12-0-5) and Tom Evangelista added three assists. Steve Balsamo and Nick Leonard each had a goal and Cam Keller made 17 saves to secure the win.

“This was a huge win for us,” said Raiders forward Conor MacPhee. “Arlington Catholic is a great team, and it’s a big deal to beat a good team for the Super 8 rankings. Hopefully this will help us climb in the standings.”

Holland's heroics

A different player has stepped up nearly every game for Central Catholic this season, and last night it was Mike Holland. The junior defensman notched a hat trick, tying his season total for goals, and added an assist as the Raiders stomped Arlington 6-1. John Daniels, Cam Fisichelli and Tom Evangelista each added one goal in the win, and Shawn Bradley added a pair of assists. Freshman Andrew DeDuca turned aside 19 shots in net.
