Loss can't dim Hillies opening day spirit

 

HAVERHILL — Just one week after scrimmaging in the snow,Haverhill High opened the local baseball season on its brand-new artificial turf diamond at the stadium.

The turf sparkled, and at times the home team did too. Unfortunately, rebuilding Haverhill's last charge came up just short against an good-looking Triton Regional squad, 5-4.

Comei, Hillies squeak past Methuen

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, speedy Nick Comei reached on an infield hit, just beating the throw. He then stole second on another close call and scored the winning run on a long double by Riley Ruth to give Haverhill a dramatic 2-1 win over Methuen. Comei, a sophomore, also got the win on a five-hitter with nine strikeouts. He outdueled Methuen star Cal Carroll (6 hittier, 8 Ks). Methuen's run came on a Bob Cole homer.
