IPSWICH — Hard to believe, but the Ipswich team that snapped a 31-game losing streak just last Thanksgiving can realistically consider itself a playoff contender one season later.
Moving to 4-3 with a dominating 41-14 victory over Georgetown last night at Jack Welch Stadium, the Tigers are Cape Ann League Small contenders.
"We want to go to the playoffs and to do it we have to win out," said Ispwich quarterback Brendan Gallagher after a 145-yard, three-touchdown passing night. "We think we can.”
Starting fast when Nick Manos broke through the Royal line and blocked Tyler Wade’s punt, setting up a 15-yard scoring drive, the Tigers never relaxed the pressure.
“One of the big keys I thought coming into the game was field position and we were fighting it right off the bat,” Georgetown (1-5) coach Matt Bouchard said. “It was a disastrous start and we were shooting ourselves in the foot. In the second half we moved the ball, but it was too late.”
Georgetown got on the board when Wade connected with Luke Prescott for a 16-yard touchdown, slicing the lead to 20-7, but the Tigers produced two more scores before the half.
Derek Depasquale’s 8-yard touchdown run in the third quarter closed out the Royals' scoring.
