Georgetown loses 9-2 in title game

LOWELL — Heavily favored Georgetown got off to a miserable start in the Division 4 championship game yesterday, falling behind by five runs before even getting its first chance to bat.

Yes, the top of the first was an ugly inning for the Royals, who won the Division 3 North title last spring.

Matignon knocked around starting pitcher Andrew Sinkewicz immediately, scoring five times off him on three hits and two walks in the first frame.

No. 12 Matignon pulled off the upset, beating No. 2 Georgetown 9-2 on a rainy afternoon at LeLacheur Park.

“I wasn’t locating any of my pitches,” said Sinkewicz who went 1 1/3 innings, gave up seven runs, five earned, on four hits and four walks. “That’s all there is to it.”

Georgetown also made two costly errors in the first inning and four during the game.

“He left it up in the zone,” catcher Chris Esposito said about Sinkewicz, “but in reality, we didn’t make the plays that needed to be made to win the ballgame. The easy plays we made errors on. The errors cost us. The (first) inning went on and on because of errors and they scored more and more runs because of errors. You can’t win a ballgame with four errors.”

Left fielder Dean Nemeroff said the grass was wet, making it tough to grip the baseball.

“So we were making some throwing errors,” he said. “But you can’t blame it on the field. We just didn’t show up to play.”

Meanwhile, Matignon freshman Nicholas Tortora killed the Royals. He pitched a complete game five-hitter and also ripped a two-run single in the first inning while batting out of the No. 7 spot in the Matignon lineup.

“He had a deceiving delivery,” Esposito said about Tortora. “We should of hit him. But we didn’t. We just didn’t come to play.”

Nemeroff added: “We were hitting the ball hard at the fielders and they were making the plays.”

Esposito, Sinkewicz and Nemeroff all said they don’t think their team was tired from playing a game the previous night.

Georgetown got its chance to cut the deficit in the fifth inning as a hit and two walks loaded the bases with two outs. But Nemeroff grounded out to shortstop to end the threat.

“With the bases loaded I was hoping to get it to the gaps,” Nemeroff said. “You’re more likely to get a hit if you hit it on the ground. So I was just trying to hit it on the ground. It just happened to go a little too far right.”

Tortora struggled with his control during the fifth and sixth innings, giving up four hits and walking two batters.
But he battled through both innings allowing just two runs in the sixth.

“When we started rallying he lost a little bit of control,” said Nemeroff. “It wasn’t velocity (that he lost).

“Anyway you put it, it stinks,” Nemeroff said about the loss. "It was the last game for a lot of us and it’s a real bummer.”
