Lawrence High, stumbling at 1-5 and rife with disciplinary benchings, was the ultimate wounded puppy.

Unbeaten Masconomet pushed the Lancers into a corner and refused to relent, laying a rain-soaked 34-7 beating on the host club last night.

"We have all the respect in the world for Lawrence," said Masconomet (7-0) coach Jim Pugh. "Sure, they're struggling with wins and losses, but they have very good athletes out there. We know they can put points on the board."

To counter that threat, the Chieftains delivered a heaping helping of senior captain T.C. Mannetta, who carried 18 times for 170 yards and a TD in the win.

"T.C. did a great job," said Pugh. "He was around all summer, striving for a big year. I'm just more impressed each week, watching the kid run."

Sophomore quarterback Chris Splinter (5 for 9, 96 yards) ran for one score and hit Evan Bunker for a 23-yard touchdown through the air.

Captain Clay Cleveland chipped in TD runs of 6 and 23 yards for Masconomet, which led 21-7 at halftime and held Lawrence to 31 yards of offense after the break.
