HAVERHILL | No one in attendance was quite prepared for what happened in the first half last night.

"We were hurting going into halftime," said Central captain Mike Leavitt. "We came out slow. We were tied at the half and we knew we should have been up by at least a touchdown. Going into the second half, we knew what we had to do."

After a first half controlled by Haverhill, the Raiders came out on fire after the break and finished off a 19-7 victory over the Hillies at a cold, dark and muddy Haverhill Stadium.

"We gave the kids a challenge at halftime to step it up," said Central coach Chuck Adamopoulos. "They did. They had two very nice drives and we played much better defense." The Central defense didn't spend much time on the field in the second half. The Raiders put together scoring drives of 12 and 16 plays and a third drive of eight plays.

In his third game back from a hamstring injury, Leavitt finally looking like the running back that earned All-Scholastic honors a season ago. The hulking senior rushed 33 times for a season-high 176 yards and all three Central touchdowns. His previous best was a two weeks ago when he had 112 yards against Dracut.

Leavitt did most of his work in the second half, carrying 21 times for 108 yards and a pair of 1-yard touchdowns. He rushed 11 of 16 plays on the Raiders' final scoring drive.
