Ashley LeBlanc made the most of her first start, but Methuen fell to Lowell 53-44.
The sophomore center, who played in place of flu-bit Eagle-Tribune All-Star Rashidat Agboola, scored 10 points in the loss. She matched up with Red Raider 6-footers Whitney (10 points, 12 rebounds) and Brianna Wilson (14 points, 4 rebounds) all afternoon long.
“They’re really aggressive,” LeBlanc, a 6-2 sophomore, said.
Agboola, who was on the bench in sweats, was sorely missed in the post.
“Not having Rashidat in there really hurt,” coach Karen McLaughlin said.
Still, the Rangers hung around until the Red Raiders outscored them 14-2 in the third quarter to open a 47-28 lead. McLaughlin was pleased with her team in the first half. But the Rangers, she acknowledged, lacked consistency. The energy level must be high all the time.
“We need that kind of effort every minute of every night,” said McLaughlin, whose club will face Salem in the consolation round Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. Lowell will face Central Catholic in the semifinals at 6 p.m.
