LYNN — In a game where just about everything that possibly could have gone wrong for Greater Lawrence football did, there was one bright spot that came in the team's final offensive possession of game.

The return of injured quarterback Jose Caceres.

Sidelined for the past two weeks after going down with an injury back on Oct. 14 against Shawsheen, Caceres came in at running back and carried the ball six times for 38 yards, showing some speed and quickness in his brief cameo in Friday's 46-0 loss to top seeded St. Mary's of Lynn in the Division 7 North Semifinals.

"He's a player, he wants to play, so we gave him a test drive and he looked good running the ball," said Greater Lawrence coach Tony Sarkis. "Hopefully things will continue progressing the right direction with his health."

Caceres didn't come into the game until well after things had been decided. St. Mary's scored three times in the first quarter and twice in the second to take a 38-0 lead at halftime, and by the end the Spartans had forced four Greater Lawrence turnovers, including two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Prior to the fourth quarter, Greater Lawrence's only first down came as a result of an offsides penalty, which happened to negate an interception in the end zone. Greater Lawrence did force a St. Mary's fumble on the goalline late in the second quarter, but the Spartans wound up getting an interception and a touchdown three plays later before the half.

St. Mary's finished with 348 yards rushing, with Marlon Scott leading the way with 108 rushing yards and a touchdown plus a 37-yard touchdown reception. Quarterback Calvin Johnson had three touchdowns, scoring from 1 and 9 yards in the first quarter and then from 1-yard again in the third. James Brumfield had the remaining touchdown and finished with 78 yards on the ground.

"That's a juggernaut, that's a great team right there," Sarkis said. "We didn't play our best, they played their best and that's the outcome."

David White led Greater Lawrence with 49 yards rushing on 10 attempts, followed by Caceres (38 yards) and Ader Mezidor (29 yards).

Greater Lawrence falls to 5-4 on the season, while St. Mary's improves to 9-0 and will face Brighton in the Division 7 North finals.
