ANDOVER — The game could not have begun any worst for the Andover High defense.

Boston College High School running back Danny Abraham — one year after rushing for nearly 400 yards against Andover — broke his first carry of 2017 for a 68 yard touchdown, and the Golden Warriors could not recover, falling to the Eagles 34-7 in the season-opener for both teams.

“Mentally, we weren’t ready at the start of the game,” said Andover coach E.J. Perry. “We weren’t ready to go. We made a few mistakes, they made plays and we couldn’t make our plays.”
Harvard football recruit Abraham needed only 13 carries to run for 261 yards, an average of 20.1 yards a rush. He scored touchdowns of 69, 92 and 69 before finishing his day midway through the third with a 1-yard score.
That came one year after Abraham ran for 384 yards and four touchdowns on 17 carries in a 61-39 win over Andover.
“He’s a very good running back,” said Perry. “And he’s great against us.”
After allowing the first long Abraham touchdown, Andover’s defense bounced back a possession later. After the Eagles advanced to the Warriors’ 16, Andover’s Kevin Davila stuffed Abraham for a 3-yard loss. A personal foul later, BC High was forced to punt.
But that would turn out to be the Eagles’ final punt of the day. A drive after Abraham’s 92-yard score, QB Will Bowen broke an 80-yard touchdown to give BC High full control.
“It’s the kind of game that makes you sick because it was the big plays,” said Perry. “We allowed too many big plays, and that hurt us.”
Andover broke up the shutout with 0:56 left to play. New QB Dellatto drove the Warriors 73 yards, and found returning Eagle-Tribune All-Star Cedric Gillette for a 4-yard touchdown.
Dellatto finished his day 23 of 42 throwing for 192 yards. Gillette caught eight passes for 89 yards.
“We have to go, watch the tape and make some changes,” said Perry. “We need to execute better on offense and our defense needs to be better. We are getting back to work.”
