HAVERHILL — A few muffed punts here. A few fumbles there. Four failed fourth down conversions in the opponents territory. Four more dropped passes. And its quarterback was sacked seven times.
Not the kind of performance Haverhill High had planned for when playing Billerica High for the Merrimack Valley Small Schools championship last night at Harry McNamara Field.
The manty mistakes and close calls turned this into a blowout in favor of undefeated Billerica, 42-7.
"Where did we go wrong? Turnovers, mistakes, play-calling, coaching ... you name it, we did it wrong," said Hillies coach Tim O'Connor. "This was a complete program loss. We all played a role in it.
"We had a horrible practice on Thursday," said O'Connor. "And that almost always follows into the game. And it did. We had our chances, even down 28-7 in the second half, moving the ball downfield. But we couldn't make a play."
Billerica wasn't perfect last night. They had three lost fumbles and nine penalties.
But for most of the game, the Indians were efficient on both sides of the ball. They averaged almost eight yards per carry and quarterback Justin Beck was near-perfect completing 10 of 13 passes for 178 yards.
While Haverhill had varying success running the ball, too many drives were halted on failed fourth down conversions.
Billerica's first score was aided by back to back muffed punts by Haverhill, scoring three plays after the second one.
Haverhill answered back thanks to a 52-yard pass from junior quarterback Broghean McGovern to a wide open Michael Gleason. Running back Pedro Santiago tied the game up with a 3-yard run with 1:22 remaining in the first quarter.
Billerica showed why it is undefeated in the second quarter, scoring three touchdowns over a five-minute stretch to take a commanding 28-7 lead.
Haverhill took the opening drive of the second half all the way to the Indians 13-yard line, thanks to six consecutive rushes by Santiago. But it was stalled after a sack and two incomplete passes.
Billerica added two fourth quarter touchdowns, one off a 69-yard pass when they were 1st-and-35, and another on a 19-yard run.
"We have to put this behind us and we will," said O'Connor. "We have Ultimate Frisbee tomorrow. We do that every Saturday. Then we get back to business on Monday and get ready for Methuen. This wasn't pretty. We're still in the playoffs. We'll be fine."
