Tewksbury rampage rolls on

Either last Friday's loss to Methuen at Cooperstown angered the Tewksbury High baseball team, or they just want to send the league a message.

Maybe a little of both.

Two days after pounding MVC Large power Andover, the No. 1 Redmen smothered their top small division competition Haverhill, 7-0, yesterday here at the Stadium.

"They're the best team I've seen so far, far and away," said coach Chip Dunn after watching UConn-bound Scott Oberg strike out nine and walk a pair in six shutout innings of one-hit ball.

"Oberg was the conference player of the year last year, so he's pretty darn good. And we really didn't give them anything."

Tewksbury simply took it, winning all the crucial at-bats. The top-rated team in EMass was 5 for 8, driving in seven runs with runners in scoring position and two outs.

Hillie senior Leif Sorenson fell to 1-2 with the loss, allowing all seven runs, six earned, on seven hits over five innings. The righty, headed to UVM, was a pitch or two away from escaping trouble, only to be nicked up by the Redmen.

Haverhill managed only two hits, both by A.J. Scalese, who broke up Oberg's no-hit bid with one down in the fifth.

"Oberg changed his approach, and I was impressed by that," said Dunn. "His fastball might not have been as lively as last year, but he had us off-balance all day."

Now 4-3 overall and 2-2 in MVC play, the Hillies fall a game behind Tewksbury in the small.

Haverhill now heads to Whittier Tech this morning, followed by a giant MVC Small date with Justin Dietz and Dracut Monday.
