CHARLESTOWN – A year ago, Methuen pushed Charlestown to the brink, leading by 12 in the third quarter before falling in their preliminary-round matchup.

“They’re just better than last year,” said Ranger coach Rich Barden after his Merrimack Valley Conference small division titlists bowed out to the Boston City champs, 64-47, last night here in the first round of the Division 1 North tourney.

“They’re the only team to beat St. John’s Prep, that tells you where they are at. Follow the logic, they beat St. John’s and St. John’s beat Central. St. John’s, Charlestown, Central  .. They’re all pretty damn good.”

The Rangers, who finish at 12-9, could only hang around for one quarter, this time around.

A 22-6 second quarter doomed the visitors, who had no answer for the waves of Townies thrown at them.

“We were thinking about what we could do to defend them. They have the big kid who we weren’t really worried about, but he came out and played great defense,” said Barden. “Akosa (Maduegbunam, 15 points) is awesome, and their point guard (Iser Barnes) is awesome.

“Their defense hurt us, their fullcourt pressure. We just don’t have the depth they do. Our kids battle, sometimes the defense just gets the best of you.”

Charlestown made shots, too, knocking down a half dozen three-pointers against the Ranger zone.

The Townies led 39-16 at the half and had a 54-34 advantage after three quarters.

Senior Raudy Minaya paced the Rangers with 14 points. Junior Ryan Freeman chipped in nine.

No. 4 Charlestown, now 21-2, will take on Central Catholic Sunday in the quarterfinals.
