The Central Catholic softball team (17-4) wrapped up a terrific regular season, during which it won the MVC DIvision 1 title.and tuned up for the state tournament by defeating Lexington 6-3. Alex Borrelli was 3 for 3 with three RBIs and Krista Maloney was 2 for 4 and scored twice to pace the offense.

Central Catholic's Jamie Maffeo vaulted 9-6 to win the pole vault event at the Division 2 meet at Hingham.

Three other Central vaulters placed: Madison Arndt (9-6) earned second place, Alyson Spencer took fifth (8-0) and Bridget Persico earned eighth (8-0).

Senior Eduardo Machado had a huge all-around, keying Andover's volleyball win over Lexington. Machado, on a college visit to RPI, raced back just in time to make the match and lift the Warriors. "We weren't sure if he was going to make it back, and if he doesn't make it back, we don't win, simple as that," said coach David Kuykendall of the effort.

Setter junior T.J. Norton and sophomore middle blocker Kenny Doherty made their varsity volleyball debuts yesterday but played like veterans.

Norton recorded 18 assists. Doherty added seven blocks. Andover won 3-0 over Lexington. 

Tom LoMedico scored three goals and Will Reardon had five assists as Andover rolled over Lexington 9-2.

Christina Medley scored 28 points, including netting five 3-pointers. She also added nine rebounds and five blocks but Whittier girls basketball lost 56-52 to Lexington.

Ornela Llupo had 22 assists and Geena Blanchard recorded 11 digs as Haverhill volleyball won 3-2 over Lexington in girls volleyball action. 

Lexington's strong second-half defense made the difference, holding Andover to just two goals to pull away for a 9-6 victory. Matt McIver (three goals and an assist) powered the Golden Warrior offense while junior Taber Tyrrell excelled defensively.

LAWRENCE — One of the adages concerning champions is it’s tougher defending than winning that first one. If the first round of the Division 1 North Sectional was an indication, Central Catholic won’t be on cruise control trying to find its way back to the TD Garden for a second straight title.
