Andover softball scores upset

Ashley Cocchiaro blasted a home run to tie the game in the sixth, and had one of four straight RBI singles in the seventh as No. 21 Andover rallied to upset No. 12 Lexington in the Division 1 North preliminary round.

 
With the score tied heading into the seventh, freshman call-up Sophia Berald led off the inning with a walk. After a bunt single for Julianna Alpert, Sara Folan, Alexa Pacy, Cocchiaro and Julianna Barbaro all singled home runs. 
 
 
The Golden Warriors will next travel to face No. 5 Methuen on Sunday at 7 p.m. The MVC rivals split their regular season meetings.

Rangers bow out

 

  Yarmilis Vasquez and Alexa Gatonwon atsecond doubles for the Methuen girls tennis team but the Rangers fell to powerful Lexington, 4-1, in the Division 1 North quarterfinals. On the boys side, Methuen's fine season was halted by Acton-Boxboro, 5-0.

Methuen beats Lexington

METHUEN, Mass. - With under two minutes remaining in Methuen's home battle with Lexington football, the Rangers' defense faced a decisive 4th-and-10 with the Minutemen standing at the Methuen 27-yard line. The Lexington defense had come up with the game's first turnover - a Ben Burnham interception with just under 4 minutes to play - and now the Minutemen offense looked to take the late lead in a game in which they had trailed nearly the whole time. Instead, Methuen's defense held firm, forcing two straight incompletions to deliver the Rangers the win, 21-16.

After Day 1 of the North Sectional decathlon, Central Catholic's Greg Desrosiers is in third place with 2,727 points in a field of 78 competitors. 
Central's Anthony Caggianelli is seventh (2,560), Lawrence's Niko Baez is eighth (2,542), Lawrence's Alex Suarez is 14th (2,489) and another Lancer, Brian Perez, is 18th (2,394).
Lincoln-Sudbury's Anthony Sifferlen leads with 3,054 points. The action concludes today.

Andover sets date with rival

Greysen Mitchell was one of four Andover players with two goals, as the No. 8 Golden Warriors topped No. 9 Lexington 10-5 in the Division 1 North first round.
Shamus Florio, Bret Miller and Alex Trottier each added a pair of goals and CJ Puglisi made 13 saves for the Warriors.
The win sets up a rivalry matchup. Andover advances to face top seed North Andover on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Walsh Field.

Locked in a heated match with Lexington, it all came down to the first doubles team of Annette Kim and Caroline Yang for Andover. The duo won the first set 6-3, got clobbered 0-6 in the second set, but rallied to win the decisive third set 6-1 to give the Warriors (16-1) a 3-2 match victory.

In a battle of two of the top girls tennis programs in the region, Andover slipped past Lexington 3-2. The Warrioirs (16-1) won both doubles and got a pivotal 6-2, 7-5 win at third singles from Sidney Conway.
