The Whittier Tech/Amesbury hockey team tied the game in the third period, but Stoneham scored with 14 seconds left to give Stoneham a 2-1 victory in the finals of the Palm division of the Haverhill Holiday Tiournament. Anthony Licciardello scored for Whittier and Jeff Bucyk had 31 saves and played a terrific game according to head coach Chris Kuchar.

Stoneham too much for young Wildcats

A youthful Whittier squad showed some jitters on opening day and Stoneham took advantage for a 34-6 victory. The Wildcats suffered three turnovers that the Spartans turned into 22 points as they scored on their first five possessions. A nice 26-yard toss from QB Connor Bradley to sophomore Brandon Lyons in the third quarter netted Whittier its only points.

Sachems turn tables

Pentucket outscored Stoneham 22-13 in the fourth to pull out a 64-54 win in its Division 3 North tourney opener. The Sachems were 20 of 24 from the free throw line on the game, highlighted by Cory McNamara's 11-of-14 shooting. Will Angelini had a fine two-way game with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Just two weeks ago, Stoneham beat the Sachems by 17 points.

Mello has monster game

Michaela Mello scored 12 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and made seven steals as North Andover won 38-24 over Stoneham.

Cannata cited

 

 

Hobey Baker candidate Joe Cannata of Merrimack College was named the Hockey East Co-Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season as the Warriors moved up to sixth in the USCHO National poll. Cannata stopped 63 of 67 shots on the weekend, including 39 (five in overtime) in Saturday’s 2-2 tie with Maine. The senior netminder became the program’s all-time leader in Division I history with 2,698 career saves, passing Joe Exter.

Aliza Simpson (25 points) earned MVP honors as Londonderry tripped up Stoneham, 64-49, to win the Stoneham Christmas Tourney. Jamie King also made the all-tourney team.

Heartbreaker

 

 After Haverhill battled back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the score, Stoneham scored the game-winner with five seconds left in the game for the 3-2 victory in the first game of the Haverhill Tournament. Jeff Roberts scored both goals for the Hillies, who outshot Stoneham 34-23, and Jack Franklin had two assists.

Whittier falls just short at Stoneham

 

STONEHAM — Whittier ran out of time  and dropped a hard-fought 17-16 deision to Stoneham.

The Wildcats scored first on a 59-yard second-quarter run by Scott Bonneau and added a two-point run by Shane Surette to take an 8-0 halftime lead, but Stoneham scored the next 17 points, including two on a safety before Jack Cressy scored on a three-yard rush with 2:27 left in the game.

Whittier vs. Stoneham (at Greater Lowell Tech Christmas Tourney)

Ryan Grant got the hot ahand down the stretch as Whittier overcame a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to force overtime and eventually defeat Stoneham, 65-57 in the first round of the Greater Lowell Tech Tourney. Grant had 26 points and 12 rebounds while Mills Carrasco had 13 and Alvin Taylor added 12.
