Shaw, Andover down Boston Latin in North quarters

BOSTON — An extra day of waiting, a drive into the heart of Boston and a raucous opposing crowd just inches away from the court in Boston Latin’s cramped, tiny gym could do nothing to derail Andover on Sunday.

“Survive and advance,” said Golden Warriors point guard Emmett Kim. “That’s been our motto all season. We always believe that we can win, and our goal is to survive and keep playing.”

Stephen Shaw erupted for 12 first-half points to give No. 12 Andover a halftime lead it would never surrender, and Kyle Rocker scored 20 of his team-high 26 in the second half to sent the Golden Warriors to a 67-53 win over No. 4 Boston Latin in the Division 1 North quarterfinals.

Originally scheduled for Saturday, the game was postponed a day due to a forecast of snow that never arrived.

“This is awesome,” said Shaw. “We’re excited to get the win and move on. Whatever comes next, we’ll be ready for it. We’re very confident right now.”
Andover (14-8) will next take on top-seeded Lynn English (19-2) in the Division 1 North semifinals. The date, location and time had not been announced.
“This is amazing,” said senior Colin Kirkpatrick. “It was an exciting win. But we’re onto the next one. We’re very pumped for Lynn English.”
Boston Latin started hot, scoring the first three baskets of the game.
But Shaw responded with back-to-back jumpers and, after a Kim corner 3-pointer, Shaw capped a 10-point Andover run with a 3-pointer from the top of the key.
“I was feeling really good,” said Shaw. “We heard the rims here were really stiff, but it didn’t matter. Warm-ups felt good, and I felt ready.”
Latin responded with a 14-2 run of its own. But Shaw snapped that with an elbow 3-pointer, and a deep Rocker trey with less than a minute to go in the half gave Andover the lead for good.
“It was big to have the lead (at halftime),” said Kirkpatrick. “We knew how to respond to their runs. And we had confidence we could finish it off.”
Shaw opened the third period with his third 3-pointer, then followed that with a jumper and a layup to give the Warriors a 32-28 advantage. Rocker followed that with 3’s from the elbow and the top of the key.
“We felt like we could go on a run to start the third,” said Kim, who finished with seven points and made four steals. “And our runs had to be longer than their runs. We were flying, running and just going. Rocker, Shaw, they were shooting great and we were rolling.”
Latin cut the lead to just 58-50 with 2:07 left. But Aidan Cammann hit a pair of free throws and Kirkpatrick knocked down a jumper to give Andover back control. The Warriors were 7 of 8 from the free throw line down the stretch and locked down the win.
“I’m proud of the team and so proud of (Kim, Shaw and Kirkpatrick),” said Andover head coach Dave Fazio. “They’ve been with me for four years and they’re total character kids. You can count on them for everything on and off the court and they’re playing big. And the whole team is getting confidence and we’re finding a way.”
Andover will next look to earn an upset over Lynn English, which topped Lawrence 82-63 on Saturday.
“This is amazing,” said Kim. “We’re excited for the next round. Bring it on. Survive and advance.”

Haverhill nicked by 2

Haverhill trailed by three in the wanning seconds before a foul put it on the free throw line. The Hillies sunk the first to make it a two-point game and tried to miss the second intentionally to get a tip-in rebound, but the attempt missed the rim for a violation and No. 4 Boston Latin closed out the 46-44 win. Daejon Pendelton-Mills and D.J. Cunningham each had 10 points for the Hillies, who finish the season 11-11.

Doubles leads Andover back to North final

ANDOVER — With Andover in need of a victory, Elia Petros and Anna Higgins would not be denied.

After dropping the second set and falling behind 3-0 in the third, the duo rallied back to win a grueling No. 2 doubles 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-4 and clinch the No. 2 Golden Warriors’ 3-2 victory over No. 3 Boston Latin in the Division 1 North semifinals on Sunday.

“We are so excited,” said Andover head coach Alan Hibino. “It’s very exciting for the team. Boston Latin may have had the two most talented players, but we had the depth and that paid off. This match could have gone either way, and our girls stepped up.”

The Golden Warriors (19-1) advance to face No. 1 Acton-Boxboro (16-0) in the Division 1 North final on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The site is TBA.
“We’re going to have our hands full with Acton-Boxboro,” said Hibino. “They’re undefeated and the No. 1 team. But we’ll be ready. They Golden Warriors are always ready.”

Andover dropped the top two singles matches, but No. 3 singles player Sidney Conway rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory.
The star No. 1 doubles duo of Annette Kim and Caroline Yang then scored a 6-3, 6-4 victory for the Golden Warriors.
That left Petros, a senior, and junior Higgins to lock down the victory. And after some struggles, they finished it off.
“At one point in the match, they had lost 8 of 9 points,” said Hibino. “And they were down 3-0 in the third set, but came back and got the victory. And that turned out to be the clinching point. It was very, very exciting.
“We are a young team, but we are a very tight-nit group. We’re excited to get the win, and we’re thrilled for the North final.”

Scarlet Knights fall to Boston Latin in North semis

LOWELL — While the defense showed up Tuesday night at the Tsongas Center, the North Andover offense was missing in action.

Minus one-third of its top skating line, eighth-seeded North Andover managed only five shots on goal in its Division 2 North Regional semifinal Tuesday night as No. 13 seed Boston Latin took advantage of the power outage to claim a 2-0 victory Tuesday night.

“We picked a bad night not to play our best game,” North Andover coach Peter Marfione said. “We were missing (senior captain) Tyler (Buonopane) tonight, but Boston Latin played better than us. They took away our offense. They limited us to under 10 shots, and you’re not going to win a game with that.

Buonopane, who is second on the team with 18 goals and 37 points, suffered a concussion in a 5-2 win over top-seeded Danvers in Friday’s quarterfinal.

North Andover (14-8-2) defeated Boston Latin (13-7-3) twice in the regular season by a combined 8-1 and had piled up 12 goals in two regional victories. But the Knights managed only one shot on net the first 12 minutes. Two of their five shots were in an eight-second span late in the first period

“We just didn’t seem to get anything going. We’ve scored (12) goals the last two games, but we just didn’t get anything going tonight. We just didn’t have it offensively.”

Even though most of the match was spent in the Knight defensive zone, Jack Walsh kept the Wolfpack in check most of the match, surviving an early first-period penalty. The junior gave up a goal midway through the second on a Nick O’Connell one-timer blasted from between the circles.

But that was the only shot that got past Walsh, as the Wolfpack added an empty-netter with 33.6 seconds remaining.

Maintaining form, the Knights were held to only one shot in the crucial third period, while Latin piled up 11 more, including three on another power-play chance that Walsh thwarted.

“It was frustrating but not as frustrating as I thought it would be,” said Walsh, who stopped 23 shots. “It wasn’t anything the team was doing. I know the effort was there. It was just that the puck wasn’t bounding our way, but that’s the stuff you have to deal with.”

Late rally falls short for Rangers

BILLERICA — For a moment, it appeared Methuen may be able to finish the amazing comeback.

Brett Blackwell took a pass and fired home a goal with 0:39 left in regulation to cut what was a three-goal Rangers deficit midway through the third to just a single score.

Methuen followed that with a pair of rushes that nearly found the back of the net, and had a faceoff to the left of the Boston Latin goalie with five seconds left.

But No. 12 Methuen could not find that final goal, falling to No. 13 Boston Latin 4-3 in the Division 2 North quarterfinals at the Chelmsford Forum.

“We came out flying and we finished very well,” said Methuen coach Bill Blackwell. “But in the middle we started to make some mistakes. Those mistakes multiplied and put us in a hole. All season we have had trouble putting 45 good minutes together. But I am proud of the guys.”
For nearly two full quarters, Boston Latin appeared to be in full control. The Wolf Pack took a 4-1 lead 3:34 into the second quarter, and dominated the puck and the momentum.
The Rangers, however, would not go away quietly.
First, Brett Blackwell hauled in a loose puck in his zone and floated a perfect pass to Matt Horan, who was breaking towards the goal. Horan did the rest, faking out the goalie and burying the puck to make it 4-2 with 8:12 left.
Then, with 0:39 remaining, Horan set up Blackwell for his goal to make it a one-score game. But a few final attempts were saved by the Latin goal, and time expired.
“We were playing like gangbusters in the final minutes,” said Bill Blackwell. “But time just ran out on us tonight.”
Methuen was actually the enforcer out of the gates. The Rangers came out flying, controlling the puck and delivering a few big hits. Ryan Mackey gave the Rangers the lead 4:21 into play when he buried a rebound in front of the net.
But Boston Latin responded with two goals just 1:34 apart to take a 2-1 lead.
“We had talked about putting pressure on their defense and getting them off balance early,” said Bill Blackwell. “But once they settled in, they started controlling the game a little, and we started committing turnovers.”
With the loss, Methuen ended its season at 11-8-3. The Rangers made the playoffs for the second straight season after not making it the previous four years, and their record was one win shy of last season’s 12-5-4 mark, the team’s best since the Eagle-Tribune began keeping records in 1995-96.
With his goal and assist, Blackwell finishes his senior season 20 goals and 45 points, both team-highs. Horan’s score was his 17th of the season, while Mackey scored his 13th goal.
Goalie Eddie Mrozowski also impressed in just over 26 minutes of action. He made 18 saves and did not allow a goal.
“We told the guys that this is where we want to be at the end of the year, in the tournament,” said coach Blackwell. “I told the guys they should walk out of here with their heads up because they had a great year. These juniors and senior have really rejuvenated the program. This group was amazing, and hopefully we can continue this path and be back at the party every year.”
