Methuen's boys took second place in the B division of the Bay State Invitational, trailing only Wakefield in the 16-team field. Sam Cook had a superb day, finishing 11th, to lead the way and Eric Salvo was 14th.

North Andover scored four times in the first period on its way to a 5-1 victory over Wakefield. Pat Moran had two goals and an assist for the Knights (5-2-2) and Matt Lucy had a goal and two assists.

Royals take third

 

Georgetown-Ipswich, which won the Scituate Tournament a week earlier, had its best performance in years by placing third in the 16-team Wakefield tournament, one place ahead of Methuen, which was battling illness and injuries.

The Methuen wrestling team is getting healthier and the results of Saturday's Wakefield Tournament is all the evidence you need.

The Rangers placed in 12 of 14 weight classes and rode a huge consolation semifinal round un which they had five pins to an impressive championship.

Kyle Sedler put Pentucket on the board early with a goal, and the Sachems carried the advantage to halftime. Unfortunately, that's when upset-minded Wakefield kicked it into gear, and the No. 11 seed stormed past the No. 3 Sachems, 2-1, in the quarterfinals of the Division 3 North Tournament.

Unbeaten Methuen beat the weather and handed Wakefield (5-1) its first loss. In an 11-5 win, Amanda Conway smacked a 2-run homer, while Heather McLaughlin (3 hits, 2 runs), Kelly Blackwell (4 for 4) and Kat LeFebre (3 for 4) also had big days.

Pentucket's Wesolowski wins title

After finishing second at state last year, Pentucket’s Josh Wesolowski was determined to take it all this year and Saturday he did just that, rolling to the 132-pound Division 3 state title. He won 14-0 in the championship match after following a pin with two technical falls, improving his season record to 30-0.

Also wrestling well for the Sachems was Noah Malhi, who was third at 182.

Sophomore blueliner Patrick Hughes netted his first varsity goal and Steven Schuhwerk (2 goals, 2 assists), Will Sauerbrunn (goal, 2 assists) and Brian Sargent (3 assists) were other offensive mainstays in Andover's 4-1 win over Wakefield.

Methuen 2nd at Wakefield

 

Methuen was truly a runner-up at the Wakefield Tournament. Not only did the Rangers finish second to Catholic Memorial, but they had four wrestlers take runner-up places.

The only champion for the Rangers was impressive freshman Travis Manick, who grabbed a 5-2 decision in the finals for the title at 160 pounds.
