Surette wins opener for Whittier

A Shane Surette single in the bottom of the seventh inning was the difference, as Whittier beat Lowell Catholic 6-5 to open the season. Surette's base knock plated Andrew Wells, who also got the win on the mound after seven innings of work.

Whittier came within a victory in the heavyweight class of sweeping its tri-meet, dropping a 42-36 verdict to Minuteman and beating Lowell Catholic, 36-6. Travis Yell had two dominating first-period pins while junior Josh Zaino continued his season of strong improvement with a pair of pins, winning in four of his last five matches.

Eric Sokoloski scored twice and Cam Knight had a goal and two assists for the Hornets, who are 8-1-1 in their last 10 games and unbeaten in their last five.

Merrimack players cited

 

 

 Four Merrimack College football players were named to the Football Gazette’s Super Region 1 team, led by Shawn Loiseau, who was a first-team honoree. second team selections included David Bellmont and Tony Johnson, while Greg Abelli was a third-team honoree. Loiseau, the defensive Player of the Year, was the only first-team selection from the Northeast-10 Conference, while Merrimack led all Northeast-10 schools with four selections.

Sweeney swoops in

 

Casey Sweeney, who played Junior hockey last year, had two goals and two assists as Haverhill's hockey team (1-1) whipped Lowell Catholic 6-1 in the first round of the Dracut Holiday Tournament. Skating on the same line, Jeff Roberts (1-1) and Tom Maguire (1-1) also scored and Jeremy Noone also had a pair of goals.
