Captains Elvis Genao, Shaquille Fuentes and Juan Rodriguez won three matches each as Lawrence (9-0) beat Salem, Mass., Xaverian and Masconoment in boys wrestling action. Lawrence won 60-15 over Xaverian, 63-1 over Salem and and 60-10 over Masconomet.  

Freshman Paul Sughrue kicked off his varsity career in style, pinning his opponent at 112 pounds in just 1:22 to help Methuen defeat Xaverian, 40-33. Sophomore Jason Pendergast also excelled at 125 with a solid 9-5 win over one of Xaverian's better competitors.

Two local low scorers lifted St. John's Prep to a 240-258 Catholic Conference victory over Xaverian at Salem CC. Nick Maccario of Haverhill led all competitors with a 38 and Atkinson's Nick Pandelena was just one shot of the pace.

Similar to last year, St. John's Prep enters Thanksgiving Day with a 5-5 mark, hoping to avoid a losing season. The Eagles beat Xaverian last year to finish 6-5.

If you were to make a list of all the things the Xaverian lacrosse team has, you'd start with those three qualities.

What the Hawks don't have | after St. John's Prep shot out to a three-goal halftime lead with a strong second quarter, then held on for a tense 10-9 victory at Cronin Field | is a shot at winning the outright Catholic Conference title.

LOWELL | There was still a period left to play, but one look at the St. John's Prep bench at the end of the second period and you know this one was, for all intents and purposes, over.

Because both teams exited the ice at The Tsongas Arena at the far end of the rink, the Eagles | on the bench furthest away | had to wait for their opponents, the Xaverian Hawks, to clear the ice first.

No matter what the sport is, when you don't score, you don't win.

The St. John's Prep hockey team found that out the hard way last night, dropping their Catholic Conference tilt at Xaverian, 3-0.

The Eagles (5-4-3) had 16 shots in the first period and had 34 for the contest, but couldn't dent the net once as Hawks' keeper Kyle MacDonald stopped everything fired his way. St. John's trailed, 1-0, with 5:40 remaining when host Xaverian doubled its lead on a Bill Scannell tally. The hosts added an empty netter from Matt Morin in the final minute.

So why does the St. John's Prep hockey team feel the need to let their opponents take the initiative with a big hit or a goal before raising their own level of play?

Greater Lawrence (5-0) continued to roll, blasting Xaverian 48-19. Freshman Matthew Buco (103) remained unbeaten and had one of seven pins for the Reggies, who have now won 30 straight matches. He, Angel Rivera (189) and Victor Sosa (215) all had first-period pins. Steven Nickerson captured a nice 7-4 decision at 125.

DANVERS | After quarterback Scott Darby took a knee with 18 seconds remaining, St. John's Prep football players raced onto the field at Cronin Field to celebrate a satisfying come-from-behind 21-17 win over Xaverian.
