Lawrence blanks Malden for second straight win

LAWRENCE — One week after snapping a 23-game losing streak, Lawrence ended another even longer streak while also hoping they began a couple postive skeins of their own.

With Saturday's 15-0 whitewashing of Malden, Lawrence won two straight for the first time since defeating Malden 12-0 in the second week of the 2015 season (29 games). That victory also marked the last time the Lancers had posted a shutout.

"Better than that though is we had never won a Saturday game since I've been here," said Lawrence coach Mike Yameen, in his 13th season on the job. "I don't know why. The first few years, I just don't think our guys were used to playing on Saturdays, so we started playing the JVs and freshmen on Saturdays years back.

"And it wasn't pretty today, but we got the job done. So, we've broken two streaks and started a Saturday-win streak."

While the Lawrence defense dominated the day, it was an opportunistic offense that provided the early spark. Jacob Tamayo capped a 48-yard drive with a 13-yard pass to Andre Wilson — one of three recievers he connected with on the drive. In the game Lawrence (2-7) began five of their eight possessions in Golden Tornados territory.

"The first drive we came out with a lot of confidence out of the locker room," Tamayo said. "We were all pumped up and ready to go. (After last week's win over Medford), we were even more eager to win another."

That's when a defense led by middle linebacker Brandon Santell took over. The Lancers limited winless Malden to six plays in the opening quarter and 16 in the first half for a measly 10 yards. The punt defense provided a couple points of its own when Branden Duncan tackled punter Eddy Vincent in the end zone with 2:34 left in the half.

"Defensively, we've been playing well all year," Yameen said. "We had to make a couple adjustments after the second half, but our guys made some turnovers that helped us out tremendously."

Santell, who had one of Lawrence's five tackles for losses, recovered two fumbles on back-to-back Malden possessions in the third quarter while teammate Anthony Martinez scooped up another on the Tornados' ensuing drive. Malden, which was averaging 5.5 points per game, finished with 72 yards on 30 plays.

"We just had a good game today," Santell said. "We knew the coaches prepared us well ... It's real enjoyable. It was tough losing those first seven, but now we're trying to get a new streak with wins. We're 2-0 now and hopefully we'll get another one next week."

The third fumble recovery set up Lawrence's final scoring drive which ended on a 6-yard run by Gianni Vargas with 3:41 remaining.

"Field position was huge," said Yameen. "We always talk about that with the guys to shorten up the field for us. It's been frustrating, but like I said, we started last week and hopefully we have a new streak going."
