Hornets hold LeFort

Kara LeFort — the only non-senior in the North Reading lineup, battled for a three-set victory as part of a 4-1 non-league victory over Malden. The sophomore rebounded from an opening set loss at second singles to tie things up, 6-0, only to face a tiebreaker in the deciding set. LeFort dominated the tiebreaker, 7-2, to take the triumph.

Victor Mendez earned his first varsity win as he pitched seven innings of four-hit ball in Lawrence's 6-1 victory over Malden. Dionys Quezada smacked a two-run round-tripper in the fourth to give the Lancers a couple of insurance runs.

Hornets dominate Malden

A trio of freshman led the way for North Reading as it easily handled Malden 14-2. Cody Carbone (goal, two assists), Eric Balenti (three goals, assist), and Chris Schippelletti (two goals) combined for nine points for the Hornets as it notched it's first win of the season, improving to 1-1.

MALDEN — A year ago, an Andover effort that could have been best described as listless resulted in a premature, first-round tourney exit.

There was no way seniors Kevin Polanco, Connor Arnold and the rest of the Warriors on the bench at Lynn Classical last February would let it happen again.

MALDEN — Methuen fell to Malden 20-7 last night. For the victors, David Freni scored two of his three touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Methuen fell to 1-2 while Malden, which had lost to Lawrence and Haverhill, improved to 1-2.

Hillies dominate Malden in shutout

MALDEN — Same players, same uniforms. But in the second half, Haverhill was a different team. After a season-opening first half that won’t make any highlight reel, the Hillies turned things around in the final 22 minutes. Behind the poised direction of senior captain Isiah Ocasio, the offense righted itself and played error-free football. And since Haverhill’s defense already had an injury-impacted Malden attack diffused, the Hillies took a 12-0 verdict at MacDonald Stadium.
