The Gloucester High School girls track team was not about to let this one slip away.

Particularly the 4x400 relay team of Rebecca MacDougal, Isabel Pett, Abbie Rogers and Brittany Diamond.

Locked up in a tight meet with Winthrop on Wednesday afternoon at Peabody High School, the hopes of a Gloucester victory rested on the shoulders of the aforementioned quartet in the day's final event.

However, the pressure didn't seem to bother MacDougal, Pett, Rogers and Diamond as they ran a season-best time of 4:36.2 to win the event and give Gloucester a dramatic 64-63 win. It was Gloucester's (1-4) first win of the spring.

Overall, the entire Gloucester team had an impressive showing. Senior co-captain Avery McNiff won the mile and the 400 and Alicia Unis was a also a double-winner, taking home the shot put and the discus. Emily Powers (two mile), Pett (high jump) and Rogers (800) also added individual victories.

Pett contributed a second place finish in the 300 low hurdles, while Olivia Brown (discus), Britta Ackerley (shot put), Kaylie McTiernan (high jump) and Bryanna Porter (high hurdles) also placed second in their respective events.

There were also several key third place finishes for Gloucester, which played a big role in the victory. Molly Asaro (two mile), Ackerley (discus), Brown (shot put), Diamond (long jump, 200), Erin Stockman (mile), Emily Castro (400), McTiernan (800) and Tori Hilshey (triple jump) took care of the third place performances.

"If any one of our girls didn't get a third place finish, then we wouldn't have won," said Gloucester head coach J.D. MacEachern in an e-mail to the Gloucester Times.
